Cock Radio, on the Couch, with Comes Quietly
G’dday mate, gotta moment?
Sure, anything for a fellow Aussie.
Good onya. When did you first join the Hash?
I attended the kids hash for 10 years or so before I realized I was probably a bit old so then I joined the Wednesday Harriet’s, realized that I was the wrong gender and then a few months I joined Lion City. I am still an associate member with the Harriets. (A bloke can't be a full member on the Harriets. A bit unnatural, really..). I also try and run with other Hash chapters, both in Singapore and when I travel. They are all good fun and each has their own culture and friendly people.
That is strange about the Harriet’s yeah, we blokes can’t be a full member but we get slugged a higher subs rate than full members pay! Let’s revolt!
I reckon the girl’s all ready think the blokes are revolting.
Mmm, true. How did you get your name?
I can't remember who came up with my name, but I was named Comes Quietly at the Harriets by the then GM, Bereth Hale because I was quiet and, well, came. I am often mistakenly called Comes Quickly, but I would just like to state for the records that this is just hearsay.
Do you have a memorable moment Comes Quickly? I mean, Comes Quietly. Sorry about that.
I have such a good time at the Hash that I often don't remember much about the run or the On Ons…. But seriously… Jumping over a big sleeping python on one of the earlier runs and then watching as Slocum almost trampled it. Many memorable moments and characters at the circles, which is funny because I didn't do the 'grown up' Hash for quite a while because I thought the idea of grownups standing around in a circle making fun of each other was all a bit of a wank, but I quickly realized that laughing is a great stress reliever, and there are plenty of laughs on the Hash. Some of the people who have had me in stitches in the circle over the years who quickly come to mind are Skidmark and Not Good Enough, Gypsy and Zip, Barbarian, Coo Chi Coo, Armless, and Machine.
What about your Favourite Run site?
I like running in the bush/jungle on relatively established trails. Anywhere around Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (Chestnut Avenue, Rifle Range Road, Jalan Kampong Chantek), Mandai Track 7, Jalan Lam Sam (Farm Mart), Lorong Lada Hitam, any of the reservoirs.
I find the reservoirs a bit tricky and wet myself. There is probably only one bloke I know who could handle the water and I’m not sure if he ever ran the Hash.
Haha, his mate Moses would come in handy too!
What do you like about the Hash?
It is a great combination and balance of exercise, being out in the bush/jungle, socializing and a guaranteed bloody good laugh. There are not too many activities I can think of that combine those four things. Also, people on the Hash really do care for each other, much like a big family or tribe. Yeah, more like a tribe…
A fairly primitive tribe at times too! What do you dislike?
Sometimes people take things a little too seriously, loose perspective and it is unfortunate when this affects the ambiance of the Hash. Unlike many people on this planet, we are all so lucky to live as we are, and life is just too short to be worrying about things that really are not that important.
Best On On?
I always enjoy the Red Lantern. Coo Chi Coo's On On earlier this year was also good. More people should try and get along to the On On.
Anyone you particularly admire on the Hash?
I admire the more senior Hashers who aren't so fit but still turn up and have a walk or run. I also admire the older Hashers who still have so much endurance and are super fit despite their advancing years. And then there are the people who make everyone laugh in the circle, as well as the people who have been committee members over the years and have helped keep the club alive.
On the Hash you should………
Pay, run, wash, drink, laugh, fall over, start again….
I hope the ‘Fall over’ bit is not directed at me? Any food you would not eat?
Anything can!
What is your favourite run of all time?
In more recent times, I enjoyed Kannot Kan's run at Jalan Lam Sam and Boo's run at Lorong Lada Hitam last year.
You are married?
Ask me in a few months time…
Woops, sorry about that! Children?
Yes, three beautiful kids - Ben (14), Joshua (11) and Anna (9), all former Hash House Horrors.
Could you improve the Hash?
I think more people are health conscious these days. I would like to introduce full strength low calorie (70% less) beer, commonly know as Blond beer. This is popular in Australia but I have not seen any in Singapore yet. I think people would also like to have a healthier option for food at the On On.
I’ve actually been drinking some of that blonde beer here in Australia. Not sure if the lower calorie count is reducing my waistline, although that may have something to do with knocking down 3 cases of it a week along with a few meat pies!
What changes have you noticed at the Hash over the years?
I haven't been at the Hash that long, so cannot say.
Any words of wisdom to leave us with?
Pay your subs, run the hash, have a wash, have a drink, have a laugh, and take care of your family and friends.
Finally, do you follow Boo?
Only when I am desperate(ly lost)!
On that note, thank you for your time Comes Quietly. See you on the Hash!
